You are allowed two college days this year. Pick up a College Day form from Mrs. Cupit, in the office, prior to your college visit. 2010-11 The Minnie Stevens Piper Foundation Compendium of Texas Colleges and Financial Aid Calendar (one copy currently available to check-out from Mrs. Keys) (a limited # of student copies will be available in mid-October) The COMPENDIUM contains a “mini-course” (p. 4-7) regarding college admission and financial aid. A summary of college entrance test dates and advanced placement and credit can be found on pages 8 through 10. Federal, state, and other financial aid programs (including scholarships) begin on page 11. Admission requirements and financial aid available at Texas colleges and universities begin on page 56. Don’t get scammed! Never pay for help with scholarships or financial aid! It can all be done for free. Two reputable, nation-wide scholarship search engines are www.schoolsoup.com and www.fastweb.com . Also check out scholarships available at the college you plan on attending (pay close attention to deadline dates – many deadlines are in the fall of your senior year). Most colleges offer both academic and departmental scholarships. To apply for financial aid for college you will need to complete the FAFSA (after January 1, 2012 of your SENIOR year). FAFSA is the Free Application for Federal Student Aid. It determines your eligibility for any federal (Pell grant) or state grants, student loans, work-study and other forms of financial aid. www.fafsa.ed.gov Tuition and fees are usually combined and range from $2,000 a year to more than $20,000. Costs may change every semester and depend on the college or university you select. Community colleges usually offer the least expensive tuition costs, but many four-year colleges and universities are also relatively inexpensive, especially for resident or in-state students. This is about what it costs today for tuition and fees at national institutions:

Source: Trends in College Pricing, College Board. You must take a College Readiness test (THEA, Accuplacer, etc.) before beginning classes at a Texas public college or university to be sure you have the reading, writing, and math skills needed for college-level work. These tests may not be required if you: · Received a TAKS scale score of at least 2200 on the math section and/or 2200 on the English Language Arts section with a writing subsection score of at least 3; · Scored a 23 or higher on the ACT composite and a minimum of 19 on both the English and math tests; · Earned a combined (verbal + math) SAT score of 1070, with a minimum score of 500 on both sections; or · Enroll in a certificate program of 42 or fewer semester credit hours a public community college or technical college. What is the difference between the ACT and SAT? The ACT is an achievement test, measuring what a student has learned in school. The SAT is more of an aptitude test, testing reasoning and verbal abilities. The ACT has up to 5 components: English, Mathematics, Reading, Science, and an optional Writing Test. (Some colleges require the Writing Test; others do not. You should decide whether or not to take the Writing Test based on the requirements of the colleges you are applying to or considering.) The SAT has only 3 components: Critical Reading, Mathematics, and a required Writing Test. The SAT has a correction for guessing. That is, they take off for wrong answers. The ACT is scored based on the number of correct answers with no penalty for guessing. ACT
